Osama bin Laden may be dead,but New York showcases his success in reshaping it as long as the current plans for the World Trade Center site are adhered to. Smaller buildings across streets from Tower footprints as empty as he commanded they be send one message...he won. Nothing can send the message that he lost except scrapping those plans and bringing back bigger,taller,stronger Twin Towers. In less than 175 days, the chief executive of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum will unveil the memorial to some 10,000 family members, heads of state and other dignitaries on the 10th anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks ever to occur on U.S. soil. For the first time, the names of all 2,982 victims of the tragedy will be read, including those from the Pentagon and on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania, as well as the six victims of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. The memorial opens to the general public the next day. That creates logistical headaches, because for the next few years, thousands of daily visitors must move through a single pathway and entrance, and must be kept safe amid the roughly dozen construction projects surrounding the eight-acre site. Officials predict that about 5 million people will visit annually, which will make the memorial the biggest attraction in New York City. The 125,000-square-foot museum, scheduled to open on Sept. 11, 2012, will be largely under the memorial. "There are two incredibly important events happening back-to-back," Mr. Daniels said. "We need both of those to be successful." The years of agonizing over every detail has paid off. Family members given a preliminary viewing said they were awestruck. Drowning out the city "You can't understand until you actually see it," said Monica Iken, a memorial trustee who lost her husband on Sept. 11. "I saw them test the waterfalls, and it's unbelievable," Ms. Iken said. "They drown out the city—you forget where you are." With the two one-acre pools largely finished and the 152 bronze panels framing the waterfalls being installed now, Mr. Daniels' team is shifting its attention to procedures and operations. Within the next several weeks, families will receive letters explaining how to find a loved one's name on the bronze panels. Names will be arranged not alphabetically but by category, such as first responders, or employees by north or south tower. Families could request that the name of their loved one be listed next to that of another victim, and algorithms were devised to fulfill those requests. A name-finder app is also being created. "This will be the beginning of a series of communications to family members to make sure when they come in September that everything goes smoothly," Mr. Daniels said. The next challenge is getting visitors on and off the grounds without incident while the area is a construction site. A 700-foot walkway starting at Albany and Greenwich streets and leading to the single entry point to the memorial is being built now. "That's what wakes me up at night," said Jim Connors, executive vice president of operations for the memorial and museum. "That passage has to be prepared to receive visitors, and it's very complicated." Last month, Gateway Ticketing Systems Inc. was awarded the ticketing contract for the memorial. Passes will be free, but visitors must make advance reservations, and only about 1,500 will be allowed on the site at one time. Visitors can begin making reservations on July 1. When ground zero building is finished, the memorial will become an unrestricted public park.
