Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 17:06:28 -0500 (EST) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding #170:New Jersey Hearing Tomorrow,THINK Chat Friday New Jersey residents...don't forget tomorrow's hearing (Tuesday,January 21) at 6PM at the student center of Rutgers University's Busch Campus on Bartholomew Road in Piscataway. See http://www.rc.rutgers.edu/centers/directions.html#bcc for directions. We need warm bodies at every event, though carpetbagging from a long distance to "outer" hearings may not be appreciated. Some New Yorkers will be there but this one is mainly for the Garden State contingent! David Lopez, who lost a friend who loved working on the 98th floor, has sent me a draft of a speech I hope he is allowed to deliver tomorrow. The recent hearings had people saying how they had only learned of the hearings recently and by chance, even in the case of family members of victims,so the role these emails play in making sure the "troops" are informed may be very important. You've got the word... now go have your say for tall towers! http://www.gothamgazette.com/rebuilding_nyc/features/public_hearings_2003/ has a story on the hearings last week that closes with an urban-utopian type characterizing rebuilding what was lost as "idiotic",but does have a selection of quotes from various speakers including our own Andrew Oliff, and the article has a link to American Spirit Tower. Gotham Gazette's Java-Chat on Friday,as noted previously, will be with Rafael Vinoly, the main spokesman for the THINK group. Their three plans include the "Sky Park",which they see as centered on an elevated park, with the three office towers (one a block south of the sixteen acres) as an afterthought to be designed later by other architects, the "world's tallest" one (surrounded by Church, Cortlandt,Greenwich, and Liberty Streets) last.(The others are the 'Great Room",which has a dunce-cap-topped-by-a-rod structure that reaches 2100 feet to antenna top on the Deutsche Bank lot,but nothing over 30 stories on the WTC site itself;and the "World Cultural Center, with the helical cagework twins rising where the old Twins were and intermittently holding occupied cultural modulces of unusual shape and high level windmills). Friday at 1 PM Eastern,we should have people there urging that they realize the office buildings should be tall and on the WTC site, and are the important thing compared to the gardens. Their "Tower 3" of Sky Park is 110 stories and 1600 feet tall, but has slightly less office space than one old Twin...as do the other two put together...but the other two need to BE put together! As for the timid desire for "phased construction",let us hark back to the way the old Twins were occupied bit by bit from the bottom even as the tops were still being constructed."Phase" vertically, not by making more buildings. They are,of course, welcome to put the antenna to 2100 feet from Great Room on top of a 1600-plus foot Sky Park tower! I note that the "Phoenix Project" petition has now been signed by some people promoting their own plans for rebuilding nowhere near as tall as the lost Towers....again,we need to get the WTCRM competition that requires tall towers in plans under way.I hope we will fill out the jury and provide a submission address soon. See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
